CRIMES AND MISDEMEANORS plays the idea of crime as comedy versus drama; SLIDING DOORS plays knowing the truth against not knowing the truth.<\/p>\n<p>In most cases, however, the two stories relate <strong>causally<\/strong>: what happens in storyline A causes a reaction in storyline B that becomes an action in B that triggers a reaction in A that becomes an action in A that causes\u2026 and so the crosscutting goes, action\/reaction, cause\/effect, building pace to climax.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, MARY QUEEN OF SCOTS uses little of either technique. Instead, the enmity between Mary and Elizabeth becomes a kind of legal argument that drags on for 40 years. Scenes are <strong>thinly disguised prosecution v. defense<\/strong> debates over whose queenship is legitimate.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_blurb][et_pb_blurb title=&#8221;On-the-Nose Dialogue&#8221; use_icon=&#8221;on&#8221; font_icon=&#8221;%%44%%&#8221; icon_color=&#8221;#ffffff&#8221; use_circle=&#8221;on&#8221; circle_color=&#8221;#e02b20&#8243; icon_placement=&#8221;left&#8221; admin_label=&#8221;On-the-Nose Dialogue&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;3.19.9&#8243; header_font=&#8221;|700|||||||&#8221; header_line_height=&#8221;2em&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>As you might expect, this story strategy constipates the dialogue with lumps of <strong>on-the-nose exposition<\/strong>. When two characters tell each other something they both already know, or should already know, an alarm should clang in the screenwriter&#8217;s head and keep clanging until the scene is reinvented.<\/p>\n<p><strong>On-the-nose dialogue is not only phony but devoid of subtext<\/strong> and subtext is the stuff and substance of acting. Hats off to the brave actors who spit out those words.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_blurb][et_pb_blurb title=&#8221;Art Film Clich\u00e9&#8221; use_icon=&#8221;on&#8221; font_icon=&#8221;%%44%%&#8221; icon_color=&#8221;#ffffff&#8221; use_circle=&#8221;on&#8221; circle_color=&#8221;#e02b20&#8243; icon_placement=&#8221;left&#8221; admin_label=&#8221;Art Film Clich\u00e9&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;3.19.9&#8243; header_font=&#8221;|700|||||||&#8221; header_line_height=&#8221;2em&#8221;]This film, like so many others, sends audiences to the parking lot thinking the thought, \u201cBeautifully photographed.\u201d So-called <strong>art films have become as clich\u00e9d as Vin Diesel action flicks<\/strong>. Their directors do not know the difference between decorative and expressive, between pretty pictures and images. Like a bad actor sobbing with fake emotion to call attention to himself as an actor, <strong>any shot that calls attention to itself as \u201cphotography\u201d is the visual equivalent of histrionics.  <\/strong><br \/>\n[\/et_pb_blurb][et_pb_blurb title=&#8221;Artificial Diversity&#8221; use_icon=&#8221;on&#8221; font_icon=&#8221;%%44%%&#8221; icon_color=&#8221;#ffffff&#8221; use_circle=&#8221;on&#8221; circle_color=&#8221;#e02b20&#8243; icon_placement=&#8221;left&#8221; admin_label=&#8221;Artificial Diversity&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;3.19.9&#8243; header_font=&#8221;|700|||||||&#8221; header_line_height=&#8221;2em&#8221;]Finally, at risk of provoking hate mail, <strong>I have to raise my hand in protest of artificial diversity<\/strong>. This film\u2019s casting violates history in service of a social cause. The theory behind it (I\u2019m guessing) is that if we see people of color in settings that history never allowed, we will in time become color blind. <strong><em>How I wish that were true.<\/em><\/strong> But I doubt it.
